Generate a post's TL;DR and FAQ with AI

Writing the article is the fun part; distilling it into a summary and a set of Q&As is the chore. The generator does the chore: it reads your post and drafts a TL;DR and FAQ for you — grounded in the article, editable before anything is saved. Where the TL;DR and FAQ end up on the page is covered in Add a TL;DR and FAQ to a post; this article is about the generator itself.

How it works

  • The generator reads the post's actual text — the same headings and body a visitor reads, including any per-post edits you've made. It doesn't browse the web or invent facts from outside the article.
  • It drafts a two-to-three-sentence TL;DR and a handful of question-and-answer pairs whose answers come from the article. If the article doesn't say it, it shouldn't be in an answer.
  • The results land in editable fields. Nothing is saved, and nothing goes live, until you save the post yourself.

Generate

  1. Open the post and click the TL;DR & FAQ tab.
  2. Click Generate from article. Once a TL;DR or FAQ exists, the button reads Regenerate from article.
  3. Review the draft. Edit any answer, remove questions that don't earn their place, add your own.
  4. Click Save draft to keep working, or Publish to push the post live.

You're still the author

The generator is a drafting tool, not a publishing tool. What ships is what you approved — every answer is on the page under your community's name, visible to readers, and the machine-readable markup always matches that visible text. Treat the draft the way you'd treat a junior writer's first pass: usually close, always worth a read.

Regenerating

Regenerate from article replaces the current working TL;DR and FAQ — including any hand edits sitting in those fields. It doesn't touch the saved post until you save, but there's no undo for the working copy, so if you've polished answers you want to keep, save the post first or copy them out before regenerating.

Regenerate whenever the article changes substantially — a summary written for last month's version of the post quietly stops being true.

Good practice

  • Finish the article first. The generator can only be as good as the text it reads.
  • Keep answers short and self-contained — two to four sentences that make sense out of context. That's what AI search tools can lift and quote. See Where FAQ schema works today.
  • Pair it with content gaps. Generation covers what the article says; Find content gaps shows what people search for that it doesn't say yet.

Troubleshooting

The results are thin or generic

The generator only has your article to work from — a short or padded post produces a short or padded FAQ. Flesh out the article, then regenerate.

Generation failed

Occasional hiccups happen; try again in a moment. If it keeps failing, save your draft, reload the page, and retry.

My edited answers disappeared

Regenerate from article replaces the whole working TL;DR and FAQ, including manual edits. The previously saved version of the post is untouched until you save — so if you regenerate by mistake, close the post without saving and reopen it.
