Set your link preview image

Paste a link almost anywhere today — a chat, a group, a post — and it expands into a card with a title, a line of text and a picture. That card is the first thing most people ever see of your community, and it is usually seen by someone who is not a member yet.

You control it with one image.

Where to set it

  1. Go to the Platform Console (the orange panel) and select your community.
  2. Open the Branding tab.
  3. Under Link Preview Image, upload an image at 1200 × 630 pixels.
  4. Save.

That is the whole task. The image is used automatically everywhere a link to your community can be shared.

What it covers

  • Your community's sign-in address — including your own custom domain, if you have one. Anyone pasting it sees your name and your image, not CommunitySync's.
  • Every link your members share from the app: questionnaires, playlists, videos, and saved essentials or software lists.

A shared property listing is the exception, and deliberately so: it shows that property's own first photo, because a picture of the house is a better preview than a logo. Reorder a listing's photos and you change its card.

If you don't set one

You are not left with a blank card. We generate a preview image from your logo on your brand colour, so a link to your community already looks like your community — check the Branding tab and you will most likely find one there.

Uploading your own always wins. It is worth doing if you have artwork with more in it than a logo.

If your community has no logo and no image at all, links fall back to the generic CommunitySync card. That is the floor, and it is the only case where your links carry somebody else's branding.

This is not your website's social image

There are two, and they are separate on purpose:

ImageWhere you set itWhat it previews
Link Preview ImageBranding tabYour sign-in address and links members share from the app
The website's social imageWebsite editor, site settingsPages and posts on your public website

Merging them would mean editing a blog post's preview silently changed what a shared questionnaire looks like. Same split as the two favicons.

After you change it

Give it about five minutes. Previews are cached briefly so that pasting a link is instant for your members.

Links already shared keep their old picture. Facebook, LinkedIn, Discord and the rest cache a preview per link, for weeks, and nothing we do reaches inside their cache. New links are correct immediately. To refresh one that is already out in the world, run it through the LinkedIn Post Inspector or the Facebook Sharing Debugger.

Choosing an image

  • 1200 × 630, which is roughly 1.9 : 1. Anything else gets cropped, and you do not choose where.
  • Keep the important part in the middle. Some apps crop to a square.
  • Big enough to read on a phone. These cards are often shown about 5 cm wide — a strapline that reads well on a monitor disappears.
  • Avoid text near the edges, for the same cropping reason.
  • Use your logo on a solid brand colour if in doubt. It is instantly recognisable at any size, which is the entire job.
