# Set a post's search snippet and share preview

*Website Content & Blog*

Every post decides two first impressions before anyone reads a word: how it looks as a **search result** (title + description in Google) and how it looks as a **share card** (image + text when the link is pasted into a message or a social post). Posts handle both sensibly on their own — the **SEO** tab exists for when you want to override the defaults.

## The defaults do the work

A post's search and social presentation is assembled from fields you've already filled in:

- **Search title** — the post's title.
- **Search description** — the post's **Summary** (from the **Details** tab).
- **Share image** — the post's **cover image** (also from **Details**).

So a post with a good title, a real summary, and a cover image is already presentable in search and shares — for most posts you never need to open the SEO tab at all.

## Override when you want to

1. Open the post and click the **SEO** tab — the **Search & social (SEO)** panel.
2. Adjust any of the fields:
   - **SEO title** — the clickable headline in search results (and the browser tab's label).
Leave blank to use the post title. Useful when the post title is clever but the search
     headline should be literal.
   - **Meta description** — the blurb under the title in results. Leave blank to use the
Summary. If the post has no Summary either, the description falls back to generic template
copy — so at minimum, give every post a Summary.
   - **Social share image (OG)** — the picture on the share card. Leave blank to use the cover
image; **Reset to cover** clears an override.
   - **Hide from search engines (noindex)** — asks search engines to leave this post out of
their results. The post stays reachable by anyone with the link. Useful for internal or
time-boxed content you don't want ranking.

The panel header flags its state at a glance: **customized** when any override is set, **noindex** when the post is hidden from search.

## Save and publish

SEO settings save with the rest of the post — **Save draft** to keep working, **Publish** to push live. Like everything on a post, they only reach the public site once the post is published, and the live site's cache can take a few minutes to reflect changes.

## Posts vs. pages

This tab covers **posts** (collection entries). Your site's regular pages — home, about, listings — have their own SEO panel inside the website editor, with a live Google preview and a checklist: see [Optimize a page for search](/website-seo-basics). Same concepts, two homes.

Behind both, every page and post also emits structured data automatically — that's covered in [What is schema markup](/what-is-schema-markup).

## Troubleshooting

### My post's description in search is generic template text

The post has no Summary and no Meta description, so the fallback bottomed out at the template's copy. Set a **Summary** in the **Details** tab (it also feeds the post's card on your blog index), or write a **Meta description** here.

### The share card shows the wrong image

The card uses the **Social share image** override if set, otherwise the cover image. Check both. And note that messaging and social platforms cache link previews aggressively — after fixing the image, a link you already shared may keep its old card for a while.

### I changed the SEO fields but search still shows the old text

Three delays stack up here: the post must be **published**, the site cache takes a few minutes, and search engines re-crawl on their own schedule — days, sometimes weeks. The first two you control; the third you wait out.

### I set noindex but the post still appears in Google

Noindex takes effect the next time the search engine re-crawls the post, not immediately. If it was already indexed, expect it to drop out over days to weeks.
